Haitises Park
Parque Los Haitises is one of the ecological attractions of the Dominican Republic. Los
Haitises National Park is located to the northeast of the country, is
located south of the Bay of Samaná, from Sánchez to Sabana de la Mar.
The landscape, dotted with small islands, with wooded hills is a contrast with the rest of the country.
The
park is a protected area with a large mangrove, with a marine part with
the bay of San Lorenzo and a terrestrial part is composed of a
subtropical forest with many small hills. In this park
there are also numerous caves (La Línea, Cueva Arena ...) with
pictographs and petroglyphs left by the Tainos, the first inhabitants of
the island of Hispaniola.
The park Los Haitises is a
reserve and sanctuary for many species of birds, fish, seafood ... some
of which are endemic to the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
The park is by boat, Sabana de la Mar, Samaná. Excursions are organized from Las Terrenas hotels, Samaná and Las Galeras hotels. This is one of the main attractions of the Samaná peninsula.
Mangrove
The mangroves of Los Haitises park is the largest mangrove forest in the Caribbean, it is formed by a labyrinth of pink and white mangroves. The mangrove is the site of oviposition of many species of fish, where the fry can grow safe from predators.
Forest
The forest of the Park Los Haitises is a type of humid subtropical forest with flora typical of the tropical regions. Trails are available to visit this forest and discover the rich flora and fauna of this reserve. With luck you can see the smaller mammal, the solenodon, snakes ... and especially many birds.
caves
The caves in Los Haitises have served as home to the Tainos, some can be visited (Do not use the flash to take pictures, as it deteriorates the drawings left by the Tainos).
La Reyna La Linea, La Arena, San Lorenzo, San Gabriel, Fun Fun Cave ... are some of the caves in the park.
The first studies of rock art in the park Haitises since 1869, but despite the richness and variety no detailed scientific study has been performed.
